Reeded Edge. Brilliant Proof. It is possible that this is the rarer J.1626 with the small amount of gold included in the planchet, but unless exacting specific gravity analysis is performed, there is no way to ascertain which planchet was used. The obverse was designed by William Barber and shows Liberty facing left, with the date below, 13 stars around and E PLURIBUS UNUM at the top. On the reverse is the name of our country, the denomination 100 CENTS below, and the complex conversions stated at the center of 15.3 G(old); 236.7 S(ilver); 28 C(opper) with 14 GRAMS below. While not the most beautiful design on the reverse, these experimental coins were testing the possibility of a smaller sized dollar coin which had the correct metallic value because of the small amount of gold included in the planchet. Delicate gold toning on the reverse, the obverse generally bright.
