1842'O' WB.101. Small Date, Small Letters. About Uncirculated and revealing evidence of an ancient cleaning in the fields. Now deeply toned with dark peripheral blue and golden-russet to the centers, matched on both sides. This toning is typical from coins stored in albums for decades. A decidedly scarce issue, as most are the Medium Date variety. On this particular coin there is a small void in the planchet in the field below Liberty's left heal. The strike is average with minor softness on the eagle's thigh, but sharp on the claws, arrows and branch. A thin die crack extends up between the 'AL' of HALF to the center talon above. Certainly within the top dozen known as published in the January 2004 Census by the Liberty Seated Collectors Club, as this number includes both Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated coins. Desirable as this is a major type and variety coin which is seldom offered in high grade.
