1803 O.102 (R-3). Large 3. About Uncirculated, nearly Choice. One of the finest seen of this variety, and with exceptional eye appeal. The surfaces are excellent with minimal signs of handling from circulation and boast fiery orange-gold toning with a touch of iridescent blue near the edge. The strike is rock solid throughout, and there are no adjustment marks. A magnifier will discover a pair of die lumps, one on Liberty's shoulder, the other above in her hair. It appears something fell onto the die and gouged it, and this obverse continued service for a considerable length of time after this event. A truly magnificent coin that is within the top four of the variety for both die states.
Ex The Queller Family Collection of Half Dollars (Stack's, October 2002, lot 28); purchased from Stack's privately, February 1982.
