1871 This coin appears to be Var.104 (R-4), however there is die clashing on either side and a subtle die line in Liberty's left abdominal area, neither of which are mentioned by Fortin for this die variety. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. A warm, satiny glow is accented by traces of golden toning. The strike is sharp and decisive.
Ex Virgil Brand, Gustav Lichtenfels et al Collections (Kreisberg-Schulman, March 1964, lot 3062); later from A Prominent Numismatist's Collection, Part II (Stack's, January 1991, lot 299).
It should be noted that Fortin's plate coin for this die variety is only a Choice Fine.
