1823/2 JR-1 (R-3). Small E's. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Obverse type: Liberty's capped bust facing left. LIBERTY engraved around the base of her cap, 1823/2 overdate below her bust. Reverse type: Modified heraldic eagle derived from the Great Seal of the United States of America. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the upper half of the rim. Small E's. E PLURIBUS UNUM on a scroll above the eagle's head. Denomination '10 C' below the eagle. A lovely, very high grade example.
All 1823 Dimes are overdates. The two obverses used this year were both originally intended for the coinage of 1822. When the Mint decided that it had enough Dimes on hand from the large mintage of 1821 it struck a much smaller number of Dimes in 1822. However, it had originally planned on a larger mintage for that year and so found itself with some extra 1822 dated dies on hand at the end of that year. Accordingly, those were overdated for use in 1823. There are two variants for the 1823 Dimes, those with small E's on the reverse and those with large ones. The obverse and reverse are toned in a coin silver gray with pale iridescent green and light gold. The fields are bright and reflective.
