1820 JR-2 (R-3). ''Office Boy'' variety. Brilliant Uncirculated. Obverse type: Liberty's capped bust facing left. LIBERTY engraved around the base of her cap, 1820 below her bust. Reverse type: Modified heraldic eagle derived from the Great Seal of the United States of America. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the upper half of the rim. E PLURIBUS UNUM on a scroll above the eagle's head. Denomination '10 C' below the eagle. A high grade example of a variety that rarely comes this nice. This is the popular ''Office Boy'' 1820 Dime variety. It gets its nickname from the clumsy and blundered way the reverse die was engraved. There are numerous punching errors on the die, the ones most noticeable being the stray letter between 'D' and 'S' in UNITED STATES, the recutting on 'S' and 'O' of STATES OF and on the 'M' in AMERICA, the fact that 'ME' in AMERICA and the numerals '10' in the denomination are too close together, and the general failure to properly space the letters on the die. The front and back of this piece are deeply toned in gray, iridescent blue green, and very deep rose. The fields are frosty and the piece has attractive lustre visible beneath the toning.
