1820 JR-1 (R-4). STATESOFAMERICA. Brilliant Uncirculated. Obverse type: Liberty's capped bust facing left. LIBERTY engraved around the base of her cap, 1820 below her bust. Reverse type: Modified heraldic eagle derived from the Great Seal of the United States of America. UNITED STATESOFAMERICA around the upper half of the rim. E PLURIBUS UNUM on a scroll above the eagle's head. Denomination '10 C' below the eagle. A remarkable example and definitely one of the best known. There is only a small handful of survivors of this variety that grade Unc. like this one. The editors of the JR reference suggested the number was three or four! Struck from the same reverse die used earlier for the 1814 STATESOFAMERICA Dime variety. The obverse die was later used for the JR-4 variety of the 1820 Dime. This might have been one of the first 1820 Dimes struck that year. Both sides of this piece are toned in silver gray and iridescent gold, the color on the reverse darker in places. The fields are lustrous and frosty. Struck from the broken state of the obverse, the die swelling on the second and third stars.
