1814. JR-1 (R-3). Small Date. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Obverse type: Liberty's capped bust facing left. LIBERTY engraved around the base of her cap, Small 1814 below her bust. Reverse type: Modified heraldic eagle derived from the Great Seal of the United States of America. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the upper half of the rim. E PLURIBUS UNUM on a scroll above the eagle's head. Denomination '10 C' below the eagle. A far superior specimen and one of the very finest seen. Much nicer than the Eliasberg coin and a near runner up to the Lovejoy coin. The editors of the JR reference suggested that ''No more than six exist in MS-60 or better condition'' There is only one 1814 Small Date variety and it is considerably scarcer than the more usually seen Large date (of which there are four varieties, only one of which is at all scarce). A gorgeous example. The centers on both sides are pale silver, nearly bright white. The peripheries around are toned in a deep coin silver gray, green, and iridescent blue. The fields are frosty and the piece has some reflectivity remaining.
