1802 JR-4 (R-4). ''Needle Beak''. Choice About Uncirculated. Obverse type: Liberty's draped bust facing right. LIBERTY above, 1802 below. Reverse type: Heraldic eagle derived from the Great Seal of the United States of America. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Lower section of eagle's beak needle sharp and penetrates star. A high grade example of a variety that rarely comes much better than VF. Eliasberg's was also graded Choice AU and the finest seen by the editors of the JR reference, the Bareford-Lovejoy coin, was only a tad better than this at BU. The recent JRCS Census mirrors this evaluation, as the highest grade reported was an MS-60. Breen thought the variety was scarce in all grades. A highly attractive example, the obverse and reverse fields brightly reflective. Both sides are graced by light gold and rose toning. The center of the obverse is slightly soft, as expected on the variety.
