1797 Tar.12. Br.2-C. (R-4). Stars 10 x 6. Choice About Uncirculated and on the cusp of Mint State. This is the only variety with this distinctive star arrangement, and all obverse stars show foreshortened inner points from die lapping.
This version of the newly adopted Heraldic eagle shows a bird with a wide, long neck and sharply defined feathers. U.S. Mint engravers strengthened the juncture of the breast with the top of the shield to separate these design elements. Richly reflective gold surfaces show some obverse hairlines and faint adjustment marks at 3:00. As is usual with this variety, the obverse has a matte-like texture, while the reverse field is boldly prooflike.
