1871'CC' Choice About Uncirculated, tantalizingly close to Mint State. Close examination reveals a whisper of rub on the highest points including Liberty's knee. This coin's centers are glowing silver, broadly surrounded by wide bands of intense russet-gold of compelling richness. The reverse shows a wide 'CC', with only faint doubling apparent in the legend. Only 1,376 were struck of this lowest-mintage Carson City date, which saw limited circulation, mostly in the far West long before collectors became aware of the possibilities of mintmarks for their collections. This date, as the late Walter Breen noted, appears ''usually in low grades... prohibitively rare in EF.'' So few survive that the date is notably rare in any condition, and high grade pieces such as the present coin are virtually non-collectible. Years may pass before a coin of comparable quality appears at auction.
