1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape type. Ryder 4 (R-4). VERMONTIS obverse spelling. 131.1 gns. Fine, or a bit better. Legends, designs and portions of the fields are a pleasing light brown hue and are contrasted by deeper graphite-gray tones that are mostly isolated to the fields. Well-centered, the date and the word QUARTA are a bit tight to the rim. Struck from the usual sunken state of the obverse die that has created the bold bulge on the struck coin. Despite the sunken state of the obverse and die and average circulation wear, the ''forest'' and rising sun face are quite easily discernable on the Green Mountains, the most salient feature of the landscape type. The Ryder 4 is also well collected as the only variety of the type to feature the VERMONTIS obverse spelling. At 131.1 grains, this specimen falls at the upper end of the weight range noted by Carlotto for this variety.
