1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape type. Ryder 2 (R-3+). VERMONTS obverse spelling. 143.0 gns. Extremely Fine for sharpness. Strike is full, creating remarkably well-defined mountain range, plow and All-Seeing Eye motifs. The date and lettering are similarly full, with only the tops of PUBLICA and STELLA a bit weak due to the utter closeness of these words to the beveled planchet edge.
Decidedly hard surfaces are a dark olive-brown in hue and exhibit a very subtle porosity that does not distract the eye. The planchet striae expected on these landscape types are fortunately quite minimal on this coin, with only a small planchet void at 'VE' of VERMONT warranting specific mention. For fullness of legends and design motifs, this coin would make a great specimen for a colonial type set and represents a welcome respite from the corroded, severely flawed coins of this type most frequently encountered. Do not miss an opportunity to acquire a coin that has been off the market for over 30 years and might disappear for another 30 when the hammer falls.
