1785 Nova Constellatio Copper. Pointed Rays. Large US. CONSTELLATIO. Crosby 5-E. 125.2 gns. Uncirculated. Lustrous golden brown surfaces boast icy blue highlights in the protected areas of the devices on both sides. Well struck from an early state of the dies. Obverse is well centered and exhibits beveled rims, while the reverse is a bit off toward the top and exhibits much sharper rims; the difference in rims is most probably a result of the planchet-cutting process. A tiny curved planchet clip comes into view at the 7:00 position of the reverse. Close examination under a glass reveals a thin scratch across US that is heartbreaking on a coin of this caliber. Nonetheless, this coin rivals Ford's 3 examples that ranged from Choice EF to Uncirculated. Here is a coin for the astute collector of our nation's early coinage.
