1785 Nova Constellatio Copper. Pointed Rays. Large US. CONSTELLATIO. Crosby 4-C. 112.0 gns. Uncirculated. Lustrous, ever so gently reflective, medium brown surfaces display hints of olive and blue and even boast some subtle remnants of original mint red in the most protected areas of the lettering and central devices. Strike is bold and centering is near perfect on this pretty Confederation era copper. Although no accurate rarity ratings for Novas exist, Rod Widok's 2003 census lists 16 fixed price and auction appearances of Crosby 4-C, the highest grade of which is merely EF. Ford's pair that we offered in October 2004 were only AU. Here is an opportunity to acquire a superior grade example of this slightly scarcer die variety that very well may be condition census.
Ex Stack's sale of April 1978, lot 10.
