1787 Machin's Mills (Atlee) Halfpenny. Vlack 17-87B. 116.2 gns. Fine to Very Fine. Here is a coin that is intriguing for the lateness of the die states. Both obverse and reverse are in a broken, failing, and sunken state, the latest we have ever seen and even a bit more advanced than the latest die state in Albany Collection (lot 77). Light rose and gold toning join this coin's deep brown surfaces, which host a bunch of tiny circulation marks in metal that appears softer than usual. Rims are pronounced and raised, possibly indicating that the edge has been ''spooned.''
