1776 Continental Dollar. CURENCY. Newman 1-C. Hodder Dies 1-A.3. Pewter. 288.0 gns. Choice Fine. Usual twin leaf edge. Legends and devices are worn to a pleasing olive-gray hue, while the surrounding fields are a luminous silver-gray with touches of golden toning. Given the softness of the metal, it is not unusual to find Continental Dollars slightly wavy, like this one; such unevenness can be easily straightened by an expert hand. A few minor areas of ''tin pest'' are noted at the right side of the reverse. Struck from an intermediate state of the obverse die in which the crack at 'GI' of FUGIO has turned into a full die break but this breakage has not yet continued to the word CONTINENTAL, as seen in the late state of the obverse.
As collectors have looked on these early American issues with more favor in the last few years, prices have risen accordingly; one day in the future, when a keen researcher finds the primary source records detailing the reason of the issuance of these first coins of the American Congress, today's prices will not seem so dear.
