DOUGHTY, Francis Worcester. The Cents of the United States, A Numismatic Study, Extensively Illustrated from Selected Specimens. New York, Scott Stamp and Coin Co., 1890. Octavo, tan paper covers. Reprint by Holland A. Davis, Denver, 1934. 116 pages, 2 tables, 4 line drawing plates. Illustrations are engravings of general types. Virtually new.
Doughty is cited throughout the literature though most modern collectors have never seen a copy of this work. Walter Breen dismissed Doughty as a hack writer of boys' books whose methods required a protractor and ruler to identify varieties. However, Doughty's study was important enough to merit a pioneer reprint in the depths of the Depression.
