1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 23-P (R-4). Rahway Mint. 150.5 grains. Extremely Fine. The Maris Collection coin. Very attractive light brown in color on both sides. There are traces of original mint color faded to a pinkish red shade around the protected areas of the obverse. The obverse surface smooth and hard, just faintly microgranular; the reverse fields are similar, the center of this side showing a small flaw. Light and rather trivial scuff marks in the upper portion of the shield. Good central sharpness for the variety. Condition Census, lodged in the middle of the range.
Ex William O'Donnell Collection (Stack's, January 16, 2001, lot 119); Stack's sale of June 11, 1997, lot 940; Garrett Collection (Bowers & Ruddy, October 1, 1980, lot 1416); Maris Collection (H.P. Smith, June 1886, lot 395).
