1776 Continental Dollar. Pewter. CURENCY type. Newman 1-C (R-3). Uncirculated, near Choice. Decidely lustrous pewter-gray surfaces boast tinges of light olive-gold toning, with devices and legends toned in a perceptibly darker medium gray tone. Surfaces are original and problem-free, lacking any of the pitting or corrosion that sometimes afflicts even high grade Continental Dollars. Well struck, with all details present, including the comic face on the sun. Each and ever one of the 13 state names on the reverse are clearly legible, and the finer details of the linked rinks and central rays are clearly visible. The obverse die is broken, as usual, above the 'GI' of FUGIO, the break connecting those letters to the neighboring solid border. The dies are oriented essentially in ''medal turn'' but are rotated a few degrees from perfect medal alignment. Here is a high quality specimen of this historic issue struck for the Continental Congress, the details of which have yet to be uncovered by archival or other research. PCGS MS62.
