Undated (circa 1659). Maryland Lord Baltimore Sixpence. Small Head. Hodder Dies 2-B. 33.7 grains. Choice Very Fine. Pearl gray with hints of olive and gold toning on both sides, this specimen exhibits the weakness of strike sometimes seen at Lord Baltimore's upper face and head and the corresponding areas of the reverse. Light deposits are noted in the devices and legends, presumably from long storage in the silver tube in which this piece and its brethren were found. A tiny planchet clip is noted at the rim near the cross in the obverse legend.
Ex Morton and Eden's auction of November 2002, lot 777.
This and 18 other Lord Baltimore sixpence pieces (including the piece below) were found in a small silver counter box from Fulbeck Hall, Lincolnshire, England, the seat of the Fane family. They were evidently used as game counters, preserving them for the enjoyment of collectors 350 years after their coining.
