George I Indian Peace Medal. Copper gilt, 39.5mm. 230.4 grains. Gem Uncirculated. Superb. A remarkable example and one of the finest the cataloguer has ever seen of this rare early type of medal made for distribution to native Americans. The front is pale gold and light brown with nearly seventy five per cent of the gilding still remaining bright and clear. The reverse shows pale gilding around the Indian, the deer and hill, the tree, and most attractively around the sun face at top. The surfaces are smooth and hard and essentially free from roughness. There is no loop nor was one ever struck with the medal. The piece is quite marvelous and deserves to be in an important collection. Obverse: bust right of George I, GEORGE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN around. Reverse: An Indian drawing his bow against a deer standing beneath a tree on a hill at left.
