1854 50¢. Round. B-G 424 (Low Rarity-7). Liberty Head. Brilliant Uncirculated, featuring surfaces that are very deeply toned in iridescent and fleck-like toning, especially on the obverse. If a little brighter, this generally well struck specimen might even achieve a Choice designation, and might benefit from a S.S. Central America style ''conservation.'' B-G 424 is one of the kings of the California small gold series, with die variety collectors clamoring for the 10 or so known specimens listed in Breen-Gillio. The consignor of this coin was a customer of New Netherlands, so it is entirely possible that this is the March 1957 Numisma sale specimen or even a specimen that is entirely new to the Census. With the Jay Roe piece selling at the $6,000 level two years ago, collectors will be clamoring to acquire this long off the market specimen.
