Undated [1785] Bar Copper. 83.1 grains. Choice Very Fine. 'USA' monogram and horizontal bars on reverse are highlighted in light beige-brown against deep chestnut fields that exhibit some light, microscopic granularity. Denticles visible from 7:00 to 2:00 on the obverse and around the correspondending circumference on the reverse. Little is known of the origins of the Bar Coppers other than the 1785 New Jersey Gazette article quoted by Breen, which outlines the fact that these imitated Continental uniform buttons and had recently arrived from Birmingham's ''Hard Ware'' makers. In the absence of a sufficient national coinage, the article commented that such miscellany as the Bar Coppers would continue to fill Americans' pockets.
