1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 1-D (R-3). About Uncirculated. The surfaces are medium brown and attractive for this elusive issue. Examination will find a trivial planchet flaw through the top obverse star, and trace roughness near the rim, but this coin is far and away finer than most encountered. The dies are believed to have been engraved by Jacob Perkins, with closed 'S's that look like '8's (Breen). Coinage was brief as the recently ratified Constitution forbade states from coining their own money, although most of those coined remained in circulation for many years. PCGS AU53.
