1881 Gem Brilliant Proof. This lovely Gem boasts a thin layer of gold toning over most of the devices and fields, with darker gold and blue on the edge. A few faint hairlines are present in the upper right obverse field, but the coin still retains the desirable Gem quality. Although Breen states that most 1881 Trade Dollars have the same weak striking characteristics seen on the 1880 issue, the present coin is quite bold, with no signs of weakness on Liberty's head or the stars. A pleasing coin for the specialist who demands a full strike and excellent surfaces. A splendid example of this Proof-only date.
