1722 Rosa Americana Halfpenny. GEORGIUS DEI GRATIA/VTILE DVLCI. Stops After REX and 1722. Br.132. About Uncirculated. Bath metal. 61.4 gns. An outstanding example of what Breen calls the ''First Prototype Halfpenny'' and the finest seen of this very rare issue. Nicer than Garrett's (lot 1233) which was later sold by Bowers & Merena in May, 1998 (lot 65 at $3,300). This example is rich brown in color in the fields with traces of faded original color around the peripheries. Surfaces a little rough, patch of corrosion on DEI. The obverse is similar to the Crosby plate coin but the reverse is not (the Crosby plate coin will be found in the next lot).
Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
