1837 South Carolina Society Centennial Medal. Silver. 32.0 mm. 234.5 gns. Unsigned. Choice Brilliant Proof. Named on the reverse to ''Wm. Kunhardt'' recording his admission to the society ''12th Aug. 1817''. Lovely, deep mirror fields are graced by dark gray and iridescent toning. Rim pinch at the bottom of the obverse as also seen on the next. The front shows a hand with a bouquet of leaves and a memorial inscription around. The back carries the admission data. The South Carolina Society was founded in Charleston in 1737 by French Huguenot businessmen and artisans. Originally named the ''Two Bits Club,'' the group met weekly at a local tavern and the two bits dues offset member's bar bills. The group moved to their own hall, built in 1804, which miraculously still stands today. The Society is still active.
