Undated [ca. 1845] Die trial. Uniface. Lead. 37.5 mm. 1.8 mm. thick. About as made, blank cracked,...Undated [ca. 1845] Die trial. Uniface. Lead. 37.5 mm. 1.8 mm. thick. About as made, blank cracked, edge filed, remnant of paper backing. Bearing the bust right of Louis Philippe from the 5 Francs signed [Allen] Leonard, this is believed to have been a sample of the engraver's work submitted to the U.S. Mint in August-December, 1845 in the hopes of an engraver's position. Mr. Ford refers bidders to G.S. Chamberlain's American Medals and Medallists III, (Alexandria, 1963), pages 122-6.
