 Undated (ca. 1880's) Brooklyn Institute Rembrandt Club Medal. Silver. 58.5 mm. 6.5 mm. thick. 1,928.5 gns. Unsigned. Choice Uncirculated. Nice, rich silver gray toning on somewhat reflective surfaces. Unawarded. The obverse has a portrait of the artist Rembrandt van Rijn and the reverse an award inscription and space for the awardee's name. The Brooklyn Institute began in 1823 as the Brooklyn Apprentice's Library Association in a building at 143 Fulton Street. Lafayette laid the cornerstone. In 1843, the organization changed its name to the Brooklyn Institute and was housed on Washington Street. In 1890, the name was changed to the current Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, the forerunner to the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The Rembrandt Club was part of the Brooklyn Institute at the time this medal was struck. It is still in existence today.
