1796 Capped Bust. S.88 (R-4) Club Pole, Balanced Date. About Uncirculated-55. The pole shows a thick club-like end on this distinctive obverse, a triple leaf appears below under 'T' in CENT with paired berries flanking the stem just right of this letter. Lovely reddish-umber surfaces show some very subtle crystalline areas under a glass. This coin is slightly off-round, measuring 28.9 x 29.2mm. Its strike is exceptionally well detailed, and all design elements are boldly centered for outstanding visual effect. This coin's remarkably high grade places it at the pinnacle of the Noyes, CQR and Breen-Borckardt Condition Census, assuring the coin's standing among the finest known examples of this important variety. In Noyes' listing, only the Sheldon-Naftzger example of the Club Pole Cent places higher.
