Undated (late 1820's) New England Society for Promotion of Manufactures and Mech anic Arts Medal....Undated (late 1820's) New England Society for Promotion of Manufactures and Mech anic Arts Medal. J.AM.55. Silver. 63.6 mm. 1,719.3 gns. By Christian Gobrecht. Gem Brilliant Proof. A wonderful specimen of this rare medal. Both sides are toned in iridescent rainbow shades over brightly reflective fields. Awarded to Thomas Hurd. The front shows Gobrecht's bust of Archimedes facing right. The complex reverse shows roundels with pictures of a cotton gin, lathe, and steamship. Thomas Hurd was a pioneer in the use of steam power to drive machinery in woolen mills in Lowell, Massachusetts in the 1820's.
