Emperor Kwang Mu. 10 Won, Kwang Mu Year 10 (1906). Types as above with Korean Phonetic alphabet denomination 10 Won. Craig 52, Fr.2, KM 1130. The Osaka Mint reported 5,012 struck, but what part of this mintage was actually released is not known, and the recall and melting after 1910 was as thorough for the 10 Won as it was for the higher denomination. No effort was spared to find and destroy numismatic reminders of Korea's vanished independence. Here is a coin of breath-taking visual quality, splendidly struck and dramatically enriched by subtly glowing yellow-gold lustre verging on orange. The most diligent examination reveals a tiny reverse tic and a virtually invisible hairline above the denomination. This extraordinary coin is another outstanding candidate for the finest known of its denomination and its appearance in this sale offers an historic opportunity for collectors of Far Eastern Gold and those interested in the highest quality general world coins. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated, bordering on Superb. (Est. $60,000-$75,000)
Ex Louis E. Eliasberg Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, April 2005, lot 2316); previously ex Lipno Collection (Henry Christensen, November 1961, lot 422).
