Carlos II, 1665-1700. Cob 8 Escudos, 1699 L R. Lima. Lions and castles, Jerusalem Cross, Last Habsburg King's titles C II D. G. HISPANIAR. Rv. Crown over three lines of divided abbreviations, L - 8 - R, Pillars of Hercules, P. V. A./ 7 - 9 - 9. Fr.1, KM 26.2. This coin is boldly detailed for this intrinsically crude Cob type but is only lightly double struck, closer to round than generally seen with splendidly complete royal title, denomination, mintmark, and Assayer's mark. Far bolder than the example in the 1975 Superior American Numismatic Association Convention Sale and a trifle better than the Karon specimen. Here is an exciting and wholly desirable Choice About Uncirculated. (Est. $7,500-$10,000)
Ex Louis E. Eliasberg Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, April 2005, lot 3452); previously in the J.C. Morgenthau (Wayte Raymond) sale of the Waldo C. Newcomer Collection (February 1935, lot 460); John H. Clapp Collection.
