George II, 1727-1760. Guinea, 1745 LIMA. Laureate head l, LIMA below. Rv. Ornate crowned Arms. The LIMA coinage was struck from Gold and Silver seized by Admiral Anson from the Spanish during his circumnavigation of the globe in 1740-1744.
George II enjoyed a long reign, supported by his spouse Queen Caroline, born Princess of Ansbach, who overlooked his notorious womanizing. He had a pathological hatred of his heir, Frederick Prince of Wales. When news of his son's sudden death was brought to him during a card game, the King observed brightly, ''Fritz is dead,'' and resumed his game. This extraordinary coin boasts the boldest prooflike lustre and a magnificent strike. Its splendid overall quality would be hard to duplicate, virtually impossible to better. S.3679, Fr.343. Brilliant Uncirculated and essentially Choice. (Est. $6,000-$8,000)
