Felipe V, 1700-1746. 8 Escudos, 1732 Mo, No Assayer Initial. Armored bust r. of Spain's first Borbón King, formerly the French Duke of Anjou. Rv. Small crowned shield in Collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. This is the first machine-struck or milled Onza of the Mexico City Mint, bearing two 'Mo' mintmarks but omitting the Assayer identification altogether. Fr.8, KM 148, unpriced and called simply ''rare.''
Fernando and Xavier Calicó suggest in their widely consulted researches that very few coins were actually struck of this first machine date. The Norweb, Karon and Iovino sales offered no examples. This strike is a trifle off-center with boldly toothed borders. Circulation is extremely moderate with some trivial hairlines and faint as-made field flaws can be sought-out with a glass near the King's curling locks. Here is a ruggedly attractive example of a significant rarity. Extremely Fine. (Est. $60,000-$70,000)
Ex Louis E. Eliasberg Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, April 2005, lot 3083); previously ex Col. James W. Flanagan Collection (Stack's, March 1944, lot 262).
