1795 LM.4 (R-6). Six curls, star fifteen closer to dentils than bust, two inner berries, one outer berry under left wing. Brilliant Uncirculated and approaching the Choice category were it not for a minor planchet lamination that extends from the rim to the base of the 'T' and upper right portion of the 'Y' of LIBERTY. This very pleasing specimen is toned an antique russet-gold and blue-gray on both the obverse and reverse.
The obverse die cracked very early and severely from stars eleven to fourteen, forming a retained cud, then a full cud on the final die state. On the reverse, a faint die crack meanders from the rim to the left wing just past the 'D' of UNITED. For the die pairing, this is an early die state with the obverse crack present through stars eleven to fourteen, but the die section not yet starting to sink along the rim. Certainly well within the Condition Census for the variety; this piece ranks behind only the terminal die state Holmes coin and perhaps one or two other specimens.
Ex Richard Picker privately for $265.
