1916 Choice Extremely Fine. Here is a distinctly high-grade example of this first year of the Hermon MacNeil design, a classic key date issue sought over the years by nearly all collectors of U.S. coins. A small as-struck planchet lamination emerges under a glass on the reverse. Otherwise, this is a thoroughly pleasing coin enriched by subdued steel-gray patina, a bold strike, and a touch of lustre glowing in the most protected areas of the fields and designs. A mere 52,000 pieces of this inaugural issue were struck. SEGS XF45.
