$1.00 1888 Repunched Date. Very Choice Brilliant Proof. Here we have a very important coin for the Morgan Dollar specialist. The date was originally punched a hair to the left and remnants can be seen at the top and base of '1', at the lower left of the first '8' and below the second '8'. The variety is found only in the proof issue, is not listed by Van Allen and Mallis and is extremely rare. Variety aside, this is a magnificent coin. The surfaces are smooth and reflective with flashy lustre. The color is pale silver gray with some hints of pale toning in the dentils. Sharply squared rims and a needle sharp strike add to the overall allure. A mere 832 Proof Dollars were struck for the year, with a minute fraction of that production being of this rare variety.
