This coin shows the soft strike at the centers that is a hallmark of this date, which saw only 874 struck. The number of survivors is a source of ongoing numismatic debate, but researchers agree that perhaps as few as 20 to 35 exist today in all grades. The Dannreuther-Garrett 10-year auction guide shows 19 appearances, with About Uncirculated the highest grade listed except for a single Mint State coin. The present coin represents what may be the highest level of quality likely to be encountered at the present day.

Ex Fairfield Collection (Bowers & Ruddy Galleries, October 1977, lot 1553).
