OTTOMAN EMPIRE. Sultan 'Abdul Aziz, 1277-1293 AH, 1861-1876 AD. 100 Kurush (Piastres), Year 13 (1873). Qustantiniya. Tughra over laurel wreath. Rv. May His Victory be Glorious, Struck at Qustantiniya (Constantinople) in laurel. Fr.25, KM 679. This needle-sharp strike boasts wire rims, pristine mirror fields and meticulous detail throughout the complex design. Ottoman Proofs are wholly unlike the familiar business strikes of the same denominations. The few known possess the greatest rarity and interest, as they exist only in minuscule numbers. Finding a specimen of equally high quality would be a challenge, locating a finer one might well be an impossibility. Superb Gem Brilliant Proof. (Est. $7,000-$7,500)
Ex Louis E. Eliasberg Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, April 2005, lot 2334); obtained by Eliasberg from Mortimer Hammel in May 1945.
