1856/4 Breen-5454. About Uncirculated. Lightly cleaned long ago and muted gray with gold peripheral accents. This is the overdate described by Breen in his 1988 Encyclopedia. Although Breen noted that the 'crossbar of 4 within 6' but really meant the diagonal of the '4' in the upper portion of the '6'. Part of the left serif of the '4' extends from the middle of the lower loop of the '6'. This variety was examined by Carl Ingraffia in an article published in the Gobrecht Journal in July 1995 and he noted the correct diagnostics for the overdate. Not many have turned up, and the diagnostics faded as more coins were struck and the die was lapped. An early die state in which the overdate is relatively clear on the present coin.
