Louis XIV. Louis d'or aux 4 L, 1694 P. Dijon. Différents Lance, Sunflower. Mature laureate bust r., Sunflower after D.G. Rv. Four L's form a cross with crowned lis in the angles. Réformation identified by Crescent after IMP, struck over an earlier Louis d'or à l'écu of uncertain date. Gad.252, Fr.433, KM 302.16. This fascinating coin of one of the more difficult branch Mints shows a clear reverse undertype with much of its shield boldly visible. The undertype had been circulated at 12 Livres, 10 Sols (13 Livres in Alsace). As a Réformation, it was to circulate as 14 Livres in yet another commentary on the financial dislocation caused by the wars of the Sun King. Brilliant Uncirculated or virtually so. (Est. $3,500-$4,000)
