1805 Logan-McCloskey 1 (R-4). Choice About Uncirculated. Light silver with a trace of gray and blue in the fields. The strike on this issue is notoriously weak, and this specimen shows softness on Liberty's drapery and chest as well as on the opposing clouds on the reverse. No fully struck coins are known, and all show this characteristic weakness to varying degrees. Lustrous in the fields and the curls on Liberty are clearly defined, confirming that this coin barely circulated. There are no surface problems or scratches to distract, and this is a very pleasing specimen for the grade. The present coin is very close to or just within the Condition Census of the top half dozen known, all of which are in various grades of About Uncirculated except for the magnificent Gem example purchased from Lester Merkin's September 1968 sale. No other Mint State coins have been found or rumored of this date. NGC AU55.
Ex The Eliasberg Collection (Bowers and Merena/Stack's, May 1996, lot 907); and the Ed Price Collection.
