HAMBURG. Freie Hansestadt. Taler, 1694 IR. City Arms in elaborate frame, minute I - R/ 1694 at base....HAMBURG. Freie Hansestadt. Taler, 1694 IR. City Arms in elaborate frame, minute I - R/ 1694 at base. Rv. Imperial Eagle with Reichsapfel (orb) on its breast, legend presents the titles of Emperor Leopold I. Dav.5374, KM 130. Exceptionally well struck on a broad planchet, fully detailed with subtly flashing overall lustre creating outstanding visual appeal. There has always been debate as to which side of the city coinages constituted the obverse. Generally the Arms of the issuing city took precedence, the reverse representing only a nod to the distant and powerless Emperor of the hour. Brilliant Uncirculated. (Est. $800-$1,000)

Ex Stack's June 1997 Sale, lot 775.
