1848 N.19 (R-6). Proof-64. Red. The obverse offers brilliant rose-red surfaces. The reverse is a slightly deeper orange-red with subtle iridescence. Only a very limited number of the most trivial hairlines are noted in the fields. The eye appeal remains impressive for this issue as the surfaces are free of all but a small amount of microscopic specks, mostly confined to the obverse. Very rare. Breen notes in his Proof Encyclopedia that at least a dozen exist, the present coin is number 4 in that listing. It is now believed that between 20 and 25 Proofs exist according to Denis Loring, as noted in David Akers John J. Pittman Sale. One of the more available Proof Cents from the 1840's, but still quite elusive and always in demand.
