Louis XIII. 2 Louis d'or, 1640 A. Paris. Laureate head r., no berries in crown, title LVD. XIII. Rv. Cruciform crowned double L's, lis in angles, Latin motto Christ Conquers, Reigns, Commands. Gad.59, Fr.409. Louis XIII succeeded his father Henri IV upon his assassination. The young King was first dominated by his mother Marie de Médicis and later by his powerful chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu and never exercised full royal powers. The old-style coinage of Henri IV continued until the creation of the new Louis d'or by Royal Declaration in 1640. This coin's smooth gold surfaces join an exacting strike for bold visual quality. About Uncirculated or better. (Est. $7,000-$8,000)
