MCMVII (1907) Roman Numeral, High Relief, Wire Rim. Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Here is a delightfully gleaming near-Gem, whose breath-taking deep-gold lustre adds a three-dimensional quality to this coin's visual impact. Cartwheel lustre in the smooth fields emboldens the strength of the high relief Liberty and eagle as they thrust boldly forward from the lustrous background.
Although a trifle less dramatic than the Ultra-High Relief, this second type of the Saint Gaudens design is still regarded by most collectors as the most beautiful U.S. coin struck for circulation. The existence was the result of unprecedented cooperation between Augustus Saint Gaudens, greatest American sculptor of the Gilded Age and the youthful and enthusiastic President Theodore Roosevelt. Both were determined to create a new coinage mirroring the nation's vitality and power after the War with Spain and this design certainly achieved their objective. PCGS MS64.
