1774/3 Virginia Shilling. Newman Plate I, Breen 182. Gem Brilliant Proof. 84.4 gns. 25.3 mm. An absolutely gorgeous, stunning example of this extremely rare issue. Both the obverse and reverse are brilliantly toned in iridescent blue and rose over full brightly reflective and flashy mirror fields. Very sharply struck in the centers on both sides with full detail showing on each. A gorgeous example and a rival of every other one seen. The Finest available to collectors, nicer than the other two owned privately (Garrett's and Roper's). The pieces in the National Numismatic and Eric Newman Educational Foundation Collections are permanently impounded and off the market. Extremely rare: the cataloguer is aware of only five specimens. The 1956 Newman plate coin was probably Newman's own coin. The Virginia Shilling was struck using an obverse for a Proof gold Guinea and a Virginia reverse that has not survived on any other variety.
Ex James Ten Eyck Collection (B.Max Mehl, May 2, 1922, lot 832); Virgil Brand Collection; F.C.C. Boyd Estate.
