1838'D' About Uncirculated. A lovely, high grade example of the only Dahlonega Mint issue of the short lived, five year Classic Head type. Only 20,583 were struck. This specimen is a pleasing, pale yellow gold in color. The surface quality is exceptional, with bright fields that show some lustre around the stars. There are some signs of circulation but no heavy marks or the sorts of serious defects one would otherwise expect from the issue. These circulated widely and many of the survivors were spent and melted during the Civil War.
Ex Stack's sale of October 20, 1978, lot 321.
